Some apps — including several well-known media players — are distributed directly by their developers rather than through the Amazon Appstore. To install them on a Fire TV Stick you need the Firestick developer options menu, which Amazon hides by default on newer devices. This guide shows how to reveal it, how to allow app installs as safely as possible and how to lock things down again afterwards.
Quick answer: Go to Settings → My Fire TV → About, highlight your device name and press the select button seven times. Developer Options then appears under My Fire TV. Allow “Install unknown apps” only for the one app you need, and turn it off again afterwards.
Why the menu is hidden
On current versions of Fire OS, Developer Options do not appear in Settings until you unlock them. The menu contains two powerful switches: ADB debugging, which lets a computer on your network control the device, and Install unknown apps, which lets selected apps install software from outside the Appstore. Hiding them protects people who would never need them.
If you only use apps from the Amazon Appstore, you do not need to change anything. If you want to install a player app from its developer’s website, read on.
Step 1: Unlock Developer Options
- From the home screen, open Settings (the gear icon).
- Select My Fire TV.
- Select About.
- Highlight the first item — your device name, such as Fire TV Stick 4K — and press the select (center) button seven times in a row.
- A message confirms that you are now a developer.
- Press Back. Developer Options now appears in the My Fire TV menu.
On some older Fire OS versions, Developer Options are visible from the start, so you can skip straight to step 2.
Step 2: Allow installs for one app only
Modern Fire OS versions do not have a single “unknown sources” switch for the whole device. Instead, you choose which individual apps are allowed to install other apps. That is safer, because a random app cannot quietly install software.
- Install the app you will use to download installers — typically a file-downloader app from the Amazon Appstore.
- Go to Settings → My Fire TV → Developer Options → Install unknown apps.
- Find your downloader app in the list and switch it On.
- Leave every other app Off.
On older devices you may instead see Apps from Unknown Sources as a single switch. Turn it on only while installing, then turn it off again.
Step 3: Install your app from a trusted source
Open the downloader app, enter the official download address published by the app’s developer, download the installer and select Install. When it finishes, choose Delete to remove the installer file and free up storage.
Before installing anything from outside the Appstore, check:
- The address is the developer’s own website, not a mirror or a link from a comment section.
- The app is actively maintained, with recent updates.
- It does not ask for permissions that make no sense for a video player.
Our guide on whether sideloading apps is safe goes deeper into the risks and how to reduce them.
Step 4: Turn off what you no longer need
Once your app is installed:
- Switch Install unknown apps back Off for the downloader app. You can turn it on again later for updates.
- Leave ADB debugging Off unless you specifically need it. When it is on, another device on your network could connect to your Fire TV.
This keeps your Firestick almost as locked down as a default device, with just the one extra app you chose.
What is ADB debugging for?
ADB (Android Debug Bridge) is a developer tool for connecting a computer to an Android-based device. Amazon documents it for app developers who test their apps on Fire TV. Most viewers never need it. If a guide tells you to enable ADB debugging just to watch TV, treat that as a warning sign and look for a simpler method.
Developer Options missing? Common fixes
- Pressed the wrong item. You must press the device name at the top of the About screen, not “Fire TV Remote” or “Storage”.
- Pressed too slowly. Press the select button seven times in quick succession.
- Old software. Update via My Fire TV → About → Check for Updates, then try again.
- Different device menu. Fire TV Edition televisions and some regional versions label menus slightly differently. Look for “Device & Software” instead of “My Fire TV”.

Frequently asked questions
Will enabling developer options void my warranty?
Unlocking the menu is a standard feature Amazon provides, so it does not damage the device. What matters is what you install afterwards. Stick to trusted apps and you can use the device normally.
Do I need developer options to use IPTV on a Firestick?
No. If the player you want is in the Amazon Appstore, you can install it directly without touching developer options. They are only needed for apps distributed outside the Appstore.
