IPTV line-ups can include channels and on-demand content that are not suitable for children, and kids are quick to find their way around a remote. The good news is that you can combine controls in your player app with controls on the device itself for a setup that is hard to get around. This guide explains how to set up IPTV parental controls step by step.
Quick answer: Set a PIN in your IPTV player to lock adult and unsuitable categories and protect the settings menu, then add device-level controls — Fire TV parental controls, a Google TV kids profile or Apple TV restrictions — so children cannot simply install another app.
Two layers of protection
- The player app — locks specific channels or categories with a PIN, and can protect the settings menu.
- The device — restricts which apps children can open, sets screen-time limits and requires a PIN for purchases or installing apps.
Using both is much more effective than either alone. A PIN in the player is useless if a child can simply install another player; device restrictions do not know which IPTV channels are unsuitable.
Step 1: Lock categories in your player
Most IPTV players include a parental control or PIN lock section in settings:
- Open the player’s Settings → Parental control (sometimes under Security or Lock).
- Create a PIN. Choose something children will not guess — not 0000, 1234 or a birth year.
- Select categories or channels to lock. Adult categories are often pre-selected; add any others you want.
- Lock on-demand categories too, if the app separates them.
- Protect the settings menu with the same PIN so the locks cannot simply be turned off.
- Test by opening a locked category.
Some players can hide locked categories completely instead of showing them with a lock icon — a good option for younger children. Our IPTV player settings guide shows where these options usually are.
Step 2: Device controls
Fire TV
Settings → Preferences → Parental Controls. Turn them on and set a PIN. You can require the PIN for purchases, app launches, viewing content rated above a level in some apps, and to install apps. Fire TV also offers Amazon Kids profiles on supported devices.
Google TV
Google TV supports kids profiles: from your profile icon, add a kid. You pick which apps the child can use, and parents can set screen-time limits through Google Family Link. Children in a kids profile cannot open apps you have not approved.
Android TV (older interface)
Many Android TV devices offer a restricted profile under Settings → Device Preferences → Security & restrictions, letting you choose allowed apps.
Apple TV
Settings → General → Restrictions (on newer tvOS versions, Restrictions are managed under Settings → General or through Screen Time). You can restrict apps by age rating, require a passcode for purchases and prevent app installs.
Samsung and LG TVs
Both offer program rating locks for the TV’s tuner and an app lock that requires a PIN to open chosen apps — useful for locking the IPTV app itself on a child’s TV.
Step 3: Protect the account
- Do not share your login with children’s devices unless needed — a separate device with restricted access is easier to control.
- Keep the PIN private and change it if you think it has been seen.
- Check connections: if your plan allows several simultaneous devices, it is easy to lose track of which devices have the login. See IPTV multiple devices.

Step 4: Tidy up what children see
Beyond locks, a simpler interface helps:
- Create a favorites list with only kids’ channels and set the app to open on it.
- Hide categories that are not relevant.
- Use the device’s home screen settings to put kid-friendly apps first.
A sample setup for a family TV
| Layer | Setting |
|---|---|
| Player | PIN on adult and unsuitable categories; settings locked |
| Player | Kids favorites group as the startup screen |
| Device | Parental controls on; PIN for app installs and purchases |
| Device | Kids profile with approved apps only (Google TV / Fire TV) |
| Account | Login only on devices you control |
Limits of parental controls
No setup is perfect. Live channels can show unsuitable content during the day, program guides may not carry ratings, and determined teenagers find workarounds. Controls work best combined with conversation and keeping TVs in shared spaces for younger children.

Frequently asked questions
What if I forget my parental PIN?
Most players let you reset the PIN by clearing the app’s data or reinstalling it, which also removes your login and settings. Device-level PINs can usually be reset through the device maker’s account. Keep your PINs in a password manager.
Do parental controls work on catch-up and on-demand content?
It depends on the app. Many players lock categories in live TV, movies and series separately, so check each section when you set up locks.
