What Is Catch-Up TV and How Does It Work on IPTV?

Catch up TV lets you watch shows that already aired. Learn how catch-up works on IPTV, how it differs from on-demand and timeshift, and how to use it in your app.

Missed the start of a match or the episode everyone is talking about? Catch up TV is the feature that lets you go back in time on a live channel and watch programs that have already aired. This guide explains how catch-up works on IPTV, how it differs from on-demand libraries and timeshift, and how to find it in your player app.

Quick answer: Catch-up TV lets you replay programs that already aired on a live channel, usually from the last day to about a week. You scroll back in the program guide, pick the show and play it from the start. Only channels with an archive support it.

What is catch-up TV?

Catch-up TV is a rolling archive of recent broadcasts on a live channel. Instead of disappearing once they finish, programs stay available for a set period — often anything from a day to about a week, depending on the channel and service. You open the program guide, scroll back to an earlier time, select the program and it plays from the beginning.

On IPTV, catch-up is enabled per channel. Some channels in a line-up support it and others do not, so it is normal to see the feature on news or entertainment channels but not on every channel in your list.

Catch-up vs timeshift vs on-demand

These three features are easy to mix up because they all let you watch something outside its live time.

Feature What you can watch Typical use
Catch-up Programs that already aired on a channel, within an archive window Watch last night’s show today
Timeshift / restart The program currently airing, from its start or paused Start a show you joined late
Video on demand A separate library of movies and series Pick a film any time

Timeshift usually works on the live program only: you can pause, rewind a little or restart the current show. Catch-up goes further back, to programs that have already ended. On-demand has nothing to do with the broadcast schedule at all — it is a library. We compare live and on-demand viewing more broadly in our comparison of IPTV and streaming apps.

How catch-up works behind the scenes

When a channel supports catch-up, the service records its stream continuously and keeps those recordings for the archive window. Your player knows which channels have an archive and how many days it covers, and it uses the electronic program guide to find the exact start and end time of each program.

When you choose a past program, the player requests the archive for that time range instead of the live stream. That is why a correct EPG matters: if the guide times are off by an hour, catch-up will start in the wrong place.

How to watch catch-up in your IPTV app

Menus differ between apps, but the steps are similar:

  1. Open the TV guide (EPG) or the channel list.
  2. Look for a catch-up icon next to channels — often a clock, a circular arrow or the word “archive”.
  3. Scroll back in the guide to the day and time you want.
  4. Select the program and choose Play or Watch from start.
  5. Use pause, rewind and fast-forward within the program as you would with on-demand video.

Some apps show a dedicated “Catch-up” section that lists only channels with an archive. If you cannot find the option at all, check whether your player supports catch-up — not every app does — and whether your login type passes catch-up information to the app. Xtream Codes style logins usually do; plain M3U playlists depend on how the playlist is written.

Why catch-up might not work

If catch-up looks available but will not play, the cause is usually one of these:

  • The program is outside the archive window. Older programs are removed automatically.
  • Wrong guide time. A device clock or time zone error makes the player request the wrong time range. Fix the device time first, then the EPG offset if needed.
  • The channel lost its archive. Occasionally a channel’s archive is unavailable for part of a day.
  • The app does not support catch-up for your login type.
  • Rights restrictions. Some content may be excluded from replay.

Tips for getting the most from catch-up

  • Use favorites. Put the channels with catch-up you use most into a favorites group so you can jump straight to them.
  • Check the archive length for your favorite channels so you know how long you have.
  • Start with “Watch from start” when you join a program late — it is quicker than scrolling the guide.
  • Prefer a stable connection. Catch-up streams use roughly the same bandwidth as live ones, so the same internet speed guidance applies.

Is catch-up the same as recording?

No. Catch-up is a service-side archive that comes and goes automatically. Recording — sometimes called cloud DVR or PVR — saves a copy for you, either on the service’s servers or on your device, and keeps it longer. Availability of either depends on your provider and app, so check before you rely on it.
