Google TV and Android TV power a huge range of televisions and streaming devices — many Sony, TCL, Hisense and Philips TVs, Google’s own streaming devices and countless Android TV boxes. They are among the most flexible platforms for IPTV because Google Play offers many player apps. This guide explains how to set up IPTV on Google TV and Android TV step by step.
Quick answer: On Google TV or Android TV, install an IPTV player from Google Play, add your Xtream Codes login or M3U link, keep hardware decoding on and enable auto frame rate if available. Use the Google TV phone app as a keyboard to enter details quickly.
Google TV vs Android TV
Both run on the same Android TV operating system. Google TV is Google’s newer interface on top of it, with a recommendation-focused home screen and user profiles; Android TV is the older, simpler interface. For IPTV the setup is almost identical. Where menus differ, we point it out.
Devices you might be using include:
- Smart TVs with Google TV or Android TV built in.
- Google TV Streamer or the earlier Chromecast with Google TV.
- Android TV boxes from various brands. Prefer certified devices that show the Google Play Store and receive updates.
Step 1: Update and check the date and time
Open Settings → System → About → System update (on some TVs: Device Preferences → About). Install available updates.
Then go to System → Date & time and make sure automatic time and the right time zone are set. Correct time matters for the program guide and catch-up.
Step 2: Install an IPTV player from Google Play
- On the home screen, go to Apps (Google TV) or open the Google Play Store app (Android TV).
- Search for “IPTV player” or the app your provider recommends.
- Check that it is designed for TV (it should support remote navigation), supports your login type and is updated regularly.
- Select Install.
Google Play Protect scans apps from the store automatically. You can also install apps from outside Google Play on most Android TV devices, but it is rarely necessary on this platform — and it carries risks explained in is sideloading apps safe?
Step 3: Add your IPTV account
Open the player and add a playlist or user:
- Xtream Codes: server URL, username and password.
- M3U URL: paste the full playlist link.
Typing on a TV remote is slow. Two shortcuts help:
- Use the Google TV app on your phone as a remote keyboard — it can type into the TV’s text fields.
- Use the player’s own web or QR upload feature if it offers one.
See our comparison of IPTV login formats if you are choosing between formats.
Step 4: Set up the player for smooth playback
Most Android TV players share similar options:
| Setting | Suggestion |
|---|---|
| Video decoder | Hardware (HW) first; try software or “HW+” for a channel that will not play |
| Buffer | Medium; raise it if you see short frequent pauses |
| Auto-frame-rate | Turn on if available and your TV supports it, to reduce judder |
| EPG update | On app start, or daily |
| Parental lock | Set a PIN for adult or unsuitable categories |
Our IPTV player settings guide explains each in detail.
Step 5: Improve the connection
Many TVs and boxes have Ethernet ports; Google TV Streamer includes one, while stick-style Chromecasts need a USB-C Ethernet adapter. A wired link is the most stable option for live TV. On Wi-Fi, use the 5 GHz band and keep the router close or use a mesh system — see our Wi-Fi improvement tips.
Profiles and kids’ settings
Google TV supports multiple profiles, including kids profiles with app restrictions and screen-time limits set through Google Family Link. Combine that with your player’s PIN-locked categories for a safer setup. More in our IPTV parental controls guide.
Troubleshooting
- Storage full: Android TV devices often have limited space. Uninstall unused apps and clear caches in Settings → Apps.
- App crashes: clear cache, update the app, then reinstall if needed — see our app crash troubleshooting guide.
- No sound through a soundbar: in the TV’s sound settings, try switching digital audio output between Auto, PCM and passthrough.
- Picture stutters on films: enable auto-frame-rate matching in the player or device settings.
Casting instead of installing
Google TV devices also accept casting from phones and tablets. If your phone app supports casting, you can start a stream there and send it to the TV — handy for guests. Our casting guide explains the options and their limits.
StreamIPTV runs on Google TV and Android TV through standard player apps, and we send device-specific setup steps with every login. See the full list on our supported devices page, or compare platforms in our streaming device buying guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google TV better than Android TV for IPTV?
For IPTV the difference is mostly the home screen. Both run the same player apps from Google Play. Google TV adds profiles and recommendations; Android TV is simpler. Device speed and storage matter more than the interface.
Can I use my phone as a keyboard on Google TV?
Yes. The Google TV app on Android and iPhone includes a remote with a keyboard, which makes entering login details much faster.
